Orthokertology + Myopia Management.
Myopia (or nearsightedness) is a common vision condition in which close up objects are seen clearly, while objects further away appear blurry. This condition worsens with increased time spent on screens. It is predicted that by 2050, almost half the world’s population would have myopia. Fortunately, it can be managed by orthokeratology, a technique we pride ourselves in offering at Eyelab.
With the right myopia management plan for your child, progression can be slowed up to 80%.

So, how does it work?
When we spend more time looking at things close up, the eyeball becomes elongated and stretched to compensate for the visual stress. This also means that your prescription will go up. In its early stages, myopia can be temporarily solved with glasses. However, the rate at which myopia progresses is different for everyone. Some eyes will get worse more quickly than others. Unfortunately, if myopia remains unmanaged and continues to get worse, it may eventually lead to ocular diseases such as glaucoma or retinal detachment, which can result in permanent vision loss.
Understandably, many parents are concerned for their children and wonder if there are ways to slow down this progression. Myopia can actually be managed using a technique called orthokeratology, which is what our doctors at Eyelab are best at! Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical procedure using specially designed contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. There are many benefits to using Ortho-K lenses. When you wake up, you will be able to see clearly without the aid of glasses or contacts! This painless reshaping of the curvature of the eye also corrects mild to moderate nearsightedness and astigmatism.
